V-belt drive design calculator

Design a complete V-belt or wedge-belt drive from the motor and the speed you need, following the standard industrial method.

How to use it

  1. Enter motor power, motor speed and the driven speed you need.
  2. Choose the driven machine, hours per day and starting method to set the service factor.
  3. Read the section, pulleys, belt and centre distance; add the rated power per belt from the maker's table (or send it to us) for the number of belts, tension and shaft load.

Questions

How many V-belts does my drive need?

Number of belts = design power ÷ (rated power per belt × arc factor Kα × length factor KL), rounded up. The rated power per belt comes from the belt maker's tables for your section, pulley size and speed.

What is a service factor?

A multiplier on motor power that allows for shock loads, starting torque and running hours. A conveyor running 14 hours a day with a star-delta motor typically uses about 1.2; a crusher on direct-on-line start can need 1.5 or more.
